OL' MUSKOKA DAMN GOOD™ WINE VINEGARS

OL' MUSKOKA DAMN GOOD™ BASTING SAUCEIn the summer of 1942 my Grandmother Bessie created a tangy, honey sweetened basting sauce. She concocted it in a creamery pail and brushed it on pork ribs and chicken she was cooking for the family’s annual picnic. Bessie shared some with friends and a few neighbours close to her Muskoka home. They said she should bottle and sell it. It was “Damn Good!”

Requests for her basting sauce continued and the next thing she knew she was making sauce all of the time. She put it up and sold it in pint cream bottles.

My Home & Cottage Chef catering business still uses Bessie’s original OL’ MUSKOKA basting sauce recipe for grilling and rotisserie, oven broiling, baking, and roasting. It’s wonderful on chicken, pork, beef, fish and vegetables. Over the years I’ve taken the liberty of adding some new flavours to compliment the original recipe. My customers still tell me it’s Damn Good!

For best results, brush a little on both sides of the food during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Let the heat caramelize the sauce. For a bolder more full flavour, baste and
caramelize twice. It’s been a Damn Good tradition in our family since 1942. Your family, friends, and neighbours will love it too!

We are introducing 4 new products. Our fruit infused Fine Wine Vinegars, combined with our Extra Virgin Grapeseed Oil, make delicious vinaigrette that turns any green salad into a gourmet experience. The following recipe is a favourite with our catering clients.

Recipe

Mix crisp Boston (Bib) and Romaine Heart Lettuces with thin slices of sweet onion, toasted walnuts, fresh Bosc pear wedges and shaved slices of firm Gruyere cheese.

Mix two parts of our Ol’ Muskoka Fine Wine Vinegar (choose from Cranberry, Wild Blueberry or Raspberry infused flavours) with one part of our Extra Virgin, first cold press, pure Grapeseed Oil. Add some salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Whisk it all together and drizzle the vinaigrette over the salad. Toss the salad and let it stand for a few minutes at room temperature before serving allowing the wine vinegar to breathe and fully develop the aroma and taste of fresh Muskoka berries.
